The Social Security Administration officially released the annual list of the most popular baby names in America for 2016. The top 10 girls' names are the same 10 as 2015 with Emma and Oliva still occupying first and second place. Noah and Liam occupy first and second places in the top 10 boy's names as 2015 with Elijah entering the top 10 and Alexander leaving the top 10.

Noah was the most popular boy's baby name for the forth year in a row in 2016, while Emma was the most popular girl's baby name for the third year in a row.

Arlo was the fastest-growing name among boys (Arlo jumped 100 places to 94th on the boys' list and Arthur went up 65 places to 86th.) The 68 babies called Arlo last year, up from 28 in 2015, share their name with an 11-year-old Apatosaurus in the film The Good Dinosaur, released at the end of 2015.

For girls, Lillie went up 70 places to 90th where it was equal with Florence, which rose 52 places.

Other boys' names showing a rise in popularity include Finn (up to 34), Theo (up to 44), Jude (up to 46), Hamish (up to 58), Carter (up to 70) and Conor (up to 98).

For girls the biggest risers in the top 100 were Zara (up to 38), Emilia (up to 41), Phoebe (up to 71), Alexandra (up to 82) and Violet (up to 89).

Thousands of babies were given names which they shared with no other babies last year.
Unique baby names include Bellatrixx, Cleopatra, Gift, Gypsy, Hermione, Journey, Jupiter, Ocean, Paloma and Persephone for girls. Diamond, Harley-Davidson, Michelangelo, Nero, Odysseus and Rocky were all names given to one boy each.

In the year that pop legend David Bowie died, there was one baby boy named Bowie.

In relation to the popularity of Scotland's first minister, only 10 girls were named Nicola last year. However, this was much more popular than the prime minister's name and those of other prominent politicians. There were two Theresas, one Boris and just seven boys named Donald.

We have combined the results from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to create a baby names UK top 10 for girls and boys. We have done this by looking at the numbers of baby names across all four countries.

The result below gives a unique top 10 for the United Kingdom. Some notable observations are: the popularity of James in Scotland and Northern Ireland puts it into the boy's top 10 names, and the popularity of Sophie in Scotland puts it into the girl's top 10 names.
